Halloween : Cleopatra Modernized

cleopatra
cleopatra by lady.b featuring Forever21

This is a basic mock up of what I'll be wearing this Saturday. I was
inspired by the Elizabeth Taylor Cleoptra image. But thought I would make it bit more ME and a little more Modren.

I picked up the collar, headpiece and belt from a local costume store. I really liked the black, gold and blue theme so I got the black and turquoise dress from forever21.com,
I will be wearing my black studded booties. I'll pick up a few accessories from the drawer - gold bangles and some earrings and well THERE You have it!

Hope you all have a great weekend and I will post up some pics when I have the whole ensemble on and ready. I'm off to practicing eyeliner now . . . what will you be wearing?

Decor Inspiration: DIFFA : SF

I have a soft spot for interior design and for charitable organizations - and a small wallet to meet all my aspirations.

So like many of us I like to live through beautiful images and one of the best places to see beautiful setups is at DIFFA - the Dining by Design Foundation Fighting Aids Event. To learn more see here http://www.diffa.org/about_mission.asp

It's essentially an event to showcase innovation and creation - using table scapes as the backdrop.

Here are some of my favorite images from the 2008 SF event. The 2009 Event will be November 18th.

Product Review: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay

I love finding new - natural alternatives for skin care. The other day I was browsing through the aisles at Whole Foods spending a few minutes browsing the skin care aisles when I came across this:

I had heard about this mask a while back - I think on a few blogs or a magazine I can't quite remember - but I do remember thinking it was an interesting product. Why? because It's has only one ingredient - yes that's right just ONE - 100 percent all natural calcium bentonite clay. The same type that can be found in many spas and is used for facials, body wraps ect, etc. The bentonite clay is known for the ability to help clear skin and minimize pores - so you know I was sold !

The unique thing about this product is how you use it. It come's in a powder form like this:

You mix equal parts of the clay with equal parts of apple cider vinegar. I used about an ounce of each into a gray paste. You can also use water - but they and I prefer the cider vinegar.

Now please note - this is a warming mask - but it can be pretty intense. It's has been known to make your face pulse - or basically react to the cider/clay combo. This isn't a negative feeling - it just feels really weird - and if you don't expect it you'll be a little confused as to what is happening.

But I have been using this for a little while now and I'm LOVING IT !! I'm not sure what I like more - the feeling I get when I apply the mask - or the results. My skin feels cleansed - but not tight. I see a difference in the appearance of my pores around my cheeks and nose area (which are my problem areas)

You can find this at Wholefoods for about $7.99 for the tub - enough to last you a year I think.

Just remember to use a nice calming toner after your mask - lately I have been loving the Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner
It's gentle and I've always been led to believe (by my mother's bias) that rose water is good for the skin. Also - it's super affordable around $8.99 for 12 oz.

Soliciting Input : Holiday Gift Ideas

I'm not sure how - but it's already the near the end of October ! Most of you may think this means I'm worrying about Halloween - but I'm not really. I just realized that this year has gone by way too fast.

What this translates too is YIKES! I have about a month or so to get my Christmas gifts researched - purchased and handed out - as I'm going on a lil vacation during the holiday season to India via Dubai for some much needed family time and of course shopping for the wedding.

I'd also like to say that I have really enjoyed having this blog as an outlet this year - it's been so much fun to be able to interact with some really amazing ladies - all of whom read my randomness!

A very heartfelt THANK YOU from me to you :)

Things I want . . . Hair

Blogging is fun. Finding other great bloggers is even better - but there is a slight downside. The abundance of products/hauls that they share and my need to want every single one of them.

I thought I would try to in turn create a wishlist and see what I actually WANTED vs what I really NEEDED :) So here is my HAIR WISHLIST :

Hair Styling Trio

5andra swears by this trio . . .

Of these - I think the volumizing tonic will be on a shopping list soon. The fact that it works for fine/thin hair and adds weightless volume had me sold !

Big Impact

Big Shampoo by Lush

A few bloggers - TheeGlossGoss - SukandSpice and Bubblegarm have all posted and raved about this product.

The product is a lemon-lime margarita shampoo that is said to add lots of volume and shine to hair.

Instant Lift

Dry Shampoos are one of those things that make you think - how did I live before this?!

Lollipop26 has mentioned the Pure Abundance by Aveda a few times

The product is said to add instant volume and thickness to blah hair.

Lastly, a non blogger but someone that I follow (and probably so do a lot of you)

Rachel Zoe in one of her Zoe Reports a few weeks ago mentioned the All Nigther - Dry Shampoo.

It's pretty new to the market - but looks to be a dry shampoo that has several shades (great for us brunettes).

What is on your wishlist ?? please share

Happy Diwali

I'm spending the day with the parents enjoying lots of home made food and of course a few fireworks with the munchkins later.

What is Diwali You ask?

Diwali or Dīpāvali (Sanskrit: a row of lamps[1]) is a significant festival in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism, and an official holiday in India.[2] Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights. They light diyas—cotton string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with oil—to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual.

On the day of Diwali / Deepavali, many wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks.

Hope you're all having a great weekend Diwali or not !

Hair Matters: Tips from Jimmy Paul (Bumble and Bumble Hairstylist)

There's been a lot of talk about hair these days on blogs and twitter - so I thought I would share a few of my favorite tips from the legendary hairstylist Jimmy Paul.
If you're not familiar with his work - he does amazing stuff (think romantic 70's hair)

Here are a few of his tips:

Volume
To add volume to dry hair, lift small sections and allow them to drop through a mist of medium-hold hair spray. "then spray your entire head with dry dry shampoo and scrunch; the result is hair with lift and a lovely, seemingly no-product finish.”

For those who hate hair spray, apply mousse to a vent brush and then to damp hair—it won't squeeze the air out of the mousse. “Coat the brush with mousse and run it through one side of your hair, then refuel and do the other side,” Jimmy Paul -Allure

Texture
Use a Texture Foam like Pantene Texture Foam ($6.49) on damp hair to create texture. Blow-dry while scrunching to get volume. "Then curl two-inch sections, holding the iron vertically, and let the curls drop," says Paul. Finish by combing with your fingers. - Cosmo

Uneven Curls
If you're right-or left-handed, chances are, you can't twist the curling iron as well with your nondominant hand, so your curls don't come out even, explains Bumble and Bumble stylist Jimmy Paul. "To make it easier, point the tip of the iron down instead of up, and wrap pieces around vertically for more control." - Cosmo

And I had to include a few of his favorite styling products:

surf spray
"It gives an incredible beachy texture - it's like a holiday in a

bottle. And it smells great! I also used it if I want an edgy,
matte look."
4 oz. - $22.00

spray de mode
"This is my favorite all purpose spay - to hold finished looks,
or as a working spray with a curling iron."
10 oz. - $25.00
VIEW DETAILS

prep
"It makes it shiny and adds a little hold. – use it on slightly
wavy hair to enhance the wave – it works wonders."
8 oz. - $17.00
VIEW DETAILS

Styling Balm
"I put this on the ends of damp hair to control
flyaway
and make hair healthier and shiny."
* 3.4 oz. - $33.00

Hair of the Day: Loose Waves

Well... this was my hair of the day this weekend so it's a few days late but I really like how it
turned out :)

What I did:
  • Sprayed hair with heat protectant (GVP of course)
  • Loose waves - using a 1 and 1/2" hot tools curling iron staring 2-3" away from the roots
  • Curled around the base and then let the curl down
  • Pinned curl w. bobby pin to head (repeated)
  • Let hair cool - then dropped the pins
  • Set with garnier hair spray
What are you doing with your hair at the moment?
